Who We Are

The Mouse House... from humble beginnings the Atlanta Chapter began its journey.

Assistance League was established in Los Angeles in the early 1900s.  It was the first nonprofit, nonsectarian, nonpolitical organization begun in the West.

And, it was the first organization of its kind to recognize the potential of volunteers in helping those less fortunate achieve a better, more meaningful life. Today Assistance League has 26,000 members nationwide committing over 2.6 million volunteer hours and $36 million yearly to local communities.

Assistance League of Atlanta

In 1982 a group of 34 women founded the Atlanta Chapter in Chamblee, Georgia. In the early years, Assistance League members sold senior citizens' crafts at malls and outdoor markets.

Knowing that Assistance League needed a permanent home for selling its crafts, members searched for and found a building to lease in downtown Chamblee, which today is lovingly referred to as "The Mouse House."

Four buildings and 25 years later, Assistance League has grown into an organization with over 250 volunteer members who have recorded on average more than 45,000 volunteer hours each of the last four years. We have no paid employees.

Atlanta Chapter is housed in a 13,000 square foot facility completed in August, 2000. Members completed the capital campaign , started in 1997, within three years, raising $1.3 million to pay for the building in its entirety.

Six Philanthropic Programs

All Assistance League chapters participate in one national philanthropic program - Operation School Bell®.  This program has successfully clothed students in need for 50 years.

Each chapter is autonomous in selecting and maintaining other philanthropic programs as needed in the community. Atlanta's six programs are operated, funded, and run entirely by 100 percent volunteer efforts. The programs enable us to:

  • Comfort scared children (Bears for Children)
  • Fund college scholarships (Links to Education)
  • Aid the homeless and abused (New Beginnings)
  • Clothe students in need (Operation School Bell)
  • Support patient rehabilitation (Shepherd Center Patient Support)
  • Provide layettes to newborns (Wee Help)

Shoppers Fund Our Programs

Assistance League members restock gently used clothing at Attic Treasures.

Today, we raise more than 80 percent of funding for our philanthropic programs by selling gently used merchandise in our Attic Treasures Thrift Shop, located in the Atlanta Chapter building - across from the Chamblee Post Office on Antique Row - at 3534 Broad Street, Chamblee, GA, 30341.

Attic Treasures is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday through Saturday with extended hours on Thursdays until 7:00 p.m.
