Clothing students in need
In Atlanta, Fickett Elementary students receive Operation School Bell clothing.
Operation School Bell® provides new clothing, uniforms, shoe vouchers, and hygiene kits to thousands of school children in need throughout greater Atlanta.
This national philanthropic program was founded in 1958 with humble beginnings as a clothes closet in a Los Angeles schoolroom after Ruth Ann Montgomery, then a teacher, discovered that members of one family were alternating their days in school because they had to share clothes and there were not enough to go around.
Since then the program has served more than two million children in need. In 2008-2009, 122 Assistance League chapters served more than 270,000 children across the country with budgets totaling $11.8 million. During the same period, Assistance League of Atlanta clothed more than 7,500 children in 175 schools in the greater Atlanta area.
School counselors and/or school principals select children in elementary schools, based on need, to participate in Operation School Bell. Some schools bring the children to our chapter house for a very special opportunity to try on and take home their brand new clothing. For other schools, members deliver new clothing directly to the schools for distribution. For many children these are the first new school clothes they have ever worn.
