As a result of the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) passed by Congress in 2008, new standards for lead and phthalate content for products intended for children age 12 and under have been established.
In response, Assistance League® of Atlanta will use its best judgment when purchasing items that will be distributed to children or accepting items to be sold in its Attic Treasures Thrift Shop. We will buy from reputable manufacturers, giving preference to vendors who have already performed testing whenever possible and avoiding items manufactured in countries where there have been problems in the past.
Until such time as the guidelines are clear and measurable, Assistance League will not sell toys in its thrift shop and will avoid purchasing or reselling any products that are likely to have lead content and unacceptable phthalate levels
Attic Treasures Thrift Shop will no longer accept donations of blinds, toys, cribs and play yards, car seats, booster seats, children's jewelry, and any recalled item of any kind.
Sellers of used children's products, such as thrift stores and consignment stores, will not be required to certify that products meet the new lead limits, phthalates standards or new toy standards but, to insure the safety of those served by our philanthropic programs and our customers, we will alter our business practices as outlined above.
